Geography as a subject seeks to understand the variable character of earth surface, patterns in resource distribution and human activities over space and time. It studies places and interrelationships between human and natural environment in a systematic and rational manner. Geography studies cartography, a systematic representation of the features of the earth surface; remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS) providing scope for immense opportunities in the field of mapping, project planning, decision-making and natural resource management; human and environmental issues and disaster management to name a few. Study of these issues allows the students to understand the causes, problems and possible solution for a sustainable future. A deeper knowledge of the subject enables the student to think in a holistic manner and widens the career options in various fields such as oceanography, remote sensing, mapping and surveys, meteorology, urban studies, regional planning and so on. A compulsory field trip is organized by the Department of Geography for the students of semester IV for the partial fulfillment of the practical paper on Field Work and Research Methodology.
